No, that’s not a banjo – and no, it’s not Mumford & Sons. Season 12 American Idol winner Phillip Phillips glides through The World From The Side of The Moon with slick guitar tricks that give even the saddest of songs the illusion of joy.
Like Train, Jason Mraz, and many others before him – Phillips delivers mid-tempo, pop/rock destined for mix-tapes and weddings across Americana. The only trouble Phillips faces on his first release is finding an identity of his own; again, it’s important to note that this is his first release.
Still, The World From The Side Of The Moon is a promising LP from the first recognizable ‘Idol’ to emerge from the reality series in quite some time. Recorded in a short three-week time frame with producer Gregg Wattenberg (who worked on Train’s Save Me San Francisco, appropriate enough) and following the smashing success of Home, The World From… is a solid first-attempt at a sustainable career.
