In homage to 2010’s Bionic – and all of its uncharted, self-indulged glory – Lotus opens with a sample of French, indie-pop band M83’s Midnight City. You ask yourself: is this a sign of Christina’s insistence as an artist with a vision, or the waving of a ‘white flag’?
Christina Aguilera is no stranger to media criticism, and Lotus is likely to serve as a catalyst for an onslaught of personal attacks on the veteran’s artistry. Re-emerging (unscathed) from a widely successful stint on NBC’s The Voice; this should be Aguilera’s time to shine.
Riding in on a Max Martin ‘horse’, Your Body (the LP’s lead single), is more indicative of the album’s premise than anything else. Many of the tunes play like carefully crafted attempts at future singles, a position that may be wise – although compromising – for Camp Christina.
Aguilera claims lead writing credits on nearly all of the album’s tracks; she has touted that Lotus is merely the next chapter in her ever-evolving sonic delivery. Blank Page, a collaboration with Australian singer-songwriter (and friend) Sia (who has since written for Rihanna and Ne-Yo), is certainly a high point for Christina’s return to form.
