Terrible Records
At 26, Solange Knowles has had three, distinct careers as a pop singer. From the ‘R&B-lite’ (ala Baby-Beyonce) Solo Star (2003), to the psychedelic-soul disco Sol-Angel And The Hadley St. Dreams (2008) – True may be the first, and long awaited, insight to the (now) fully developed singer/songwriter.
Written and produced entirely by Solange with long-time collaborator Blood Orange (Dev Hynes), True plays itself as the antithesis to popadio, while serving some undeniable hooks and tempos all the same. In describing her new direction, Solange states, “This is a dance record, but the lyrics can get pretty dark at times.”
Overall, Solange has done quite a remarkable job of carving out a peculiar niche for her unique brand of neo-soul, funk, dance, pop, etc. since her critically adorned duet with indie-darlings Of Montreal. Fortunately, True is one step further down a similar path; Solange, no doubt, guided by her unique vision and undeniable talent.
